Key Info
117-125 Whalley Avenue is a Spanish mission revival building constructed in 1924 from brick masonry and stucco. One of the most notable architectural features is its wood shingle awning. The building was used as an auto services lot and gas station for many years after its construction, but later was used as retail spaces, offices, and for some other eclectic types of endeavors. The building has now been vacant for quite some time, and today, its most defining features are the graffiti, boarded-up windows and doors, broken windows, and remaining iconography and components of the last two users of the building: a Papa John’s pizza that was located at 125 Whalley Ave., and a soul food restaurant called “Greens ‘N’ Thangs” at 117 Whalley Ave. It is imminently scheduled for demolition and development of a mixed-use affordable housing project, something that has been in the works for years with the lot’s owner, the St. Luke’s Development Corporation.
