Walking down Church Street from the New Haven Green, the Southern Connecticut Gas Company building’s white concrete grid and tinted, inset bay windows appear. Despite being constructed in 1971, the building, with its large panoramic windows and clean frame, still evokes modernity. The Southern Connecticut Gas Company building was an outgrowth of Church Street redevelopment in the 1960s, as the corporate office building overtook New Haven and southern Connecticut. Originally built to project the image of a worldly gas corporation, the structure today houses labs and startups that contribute to global biomedical research and the New Haven medical R&D community.
