Sally’s Apizza

At 237 Wooster Street, two names occupy different heights of the same façade. Sally’s red lettering addresses the sidewalk, announcing a restaurant established in 1938; above the seven upper window axes, “G. CIMMINO” is set arcuated into the brick parapet. Between them, the building holds a commercial ground floor beneath two residential levels. Its history precedes the pizzeria: an earlier residential dwelling, a grocery store in which the building’s namesake still bears tribute to its owner, and yet, a notable change in the building’s use and form today. The visitor in line for what may be one of the best thin crusts in the US should look upward as much as so inward. The restaurant makes the address famous, but the upper windows and surviving owner’s inscription preserve a wider history of immigrant life, labor, and investing in Wooster Square.[1]
