Housed in what was originally a firehouse, the Calvin Hill Daycare Center feels sturdy, with its solid square shape and brick first-floor walls. From the right side of the building, a sleek yet whimsical box juts out, giving the appearance of a treehouse floating above the play yard. These contrasting architectural styles blend seamlessly inside the building and reflect Calvin Hill’s teaching and caretaking philosophy: a combination of fun, experimental play with developmentally informed social-emotional learning. Much like the building itself, Calvin Hill provides children with a solid foundation as they move on to elementary school in years to come.

Calvin Hill is also tied to Yale, as the university owns the building and partners with the daycare to progress research on children and run student-teacher training programs. With the help of funding from Yale and the New Haven School Readiness Program, the daycare center is able to make itself accessible to more families by offering tuition on a sliding scale.
