486 - 492 Orange Street
The ornamental, red-tile roof brings a Mediterranean vibe to this functional, one-story commercial block. Provides vital services – food, wine, and beer – at the gateway to the Orange Street residential area. In 2017, and for some time, tenants are the Oriental Pantry, Anna’s Catering, and the New Bottle Shop.
Five brick posts with pointed limestone trim punctuate the horizontal spread of a red tile roof that seems to shelter this small, one-story “taxpayer” commercial strip so typical of the 1920s. The “mission revival” details would have fit in nicely with the emerging courtyard apartment landscape of the time, which often adopted this Spanish theme, along with other colonial revivals.
